Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival → Negombo (Wetland Birding)

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Meet & greet by your birding guide. Transfer to Negombo (20 mins), a coastal town with lagoons, wetlands, and rich birdlife. Evening birding around Negombo Lagoon and coastal wetlands. Target species: Kingfishers, herons, egrets. Overnight in Negombo.

Day 2

Negombo → Wilpattu National Park (140 km | ~3.5 hrs)

Proceed to Wilpattu, Sri Lanka's largest national park with villu lakes and dry forests. Evening safari for birdwatching. Target species: Sri Lanka Junglefowl, storks, eagles. Overnight in Wilpattu.

Day 3

Wilpattu Full Day

Morning and evening birding safaris in Wilpattu. Explore dry zone forests and wetland lake edges. Target: dry zone forest specialists and raptors. Overnight in Wilpattu.

Day 4

Wilpattu → Sigiriya (110 km | ~3 hrs)

Transfer to Sigiriya. Ancient rock fortress region surrounded by forests and reservoirs, offering excellent birdwatching habitats. Evening birding around village tanks and forest patches. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 5

Sigiriya → Kandy (90 km | ~3 hrs)

Morning birding around local tanks. Transfer to Kandy. Evening birding in Udawattakele Forest Reserve, a rich patch of urban forest above the city with endemics. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 6

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya (75 km | ~3 hrs)

Scenic drive through tea estate country. Roadside birding en route through tea estates. Arrive Nuwara Eliya. Evening birding in Victoria Park, famous for migrant flycatchers and highland species. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 7

Horton Plains National Park

Early morning full day birding at Horton Plains (2,100m). High-altitude grassland and cloud forest reserve with dramatic World's End cliffs. Target species: endemic highland birds including Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush, Dull-blue Flycatcher, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Painted Bush Quail. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 8

Nuwara Eliya → Yala (via Ella) (160 km | ~5–6 hrs)

Transfer via Ella. Stop at Ravana Falls for roadside birding. Proceed to Yala National Park area. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Yala / Tissamaharama.

Day 9

Yala Safari → Sinharaja (180 km | ~5 hrs)

Early morning safari in Yala National Park (~3–4 hrs). Target species: raptors including Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Hawk-Eagle, waterbirds, Indian Peafowl. Transfer to Sinharaja. Evening short rainforest walk. Overnight near Sinharaja.

Day 10

Sinharaja Rainforest Full Day

Full day guided birding in Sinharaja (UNESCO), Sri Lanka's last remaining tropical lowland rainforest. Key endemic targets: Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Ashy-headed Laughingthrush, Serendib Scops Owl. Overnight near Sinharaja.

Day 11

Sinharaja → Bentota (120 km | ~3 hrs)

Transfer to Bentota. Evening relax by the beach. Optional lagoon birding. Overnight in Bentota.

Day 12

Bentota → Airport → Departure

After breakfast, optional Madu River boat safari through mangrove ecosystems rich in birdlife, and optional Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery visit. Transfer to Colombo airport for departure.
